Although there is no simple recipe for good websites, there are some simple math rules that can do wonders.

When designing the modern layout there is no way that you don't use some kind of grid system. It's the most obvious and easiest way to make sure your content looks good and clean across different devices and screen resolutions. Grids gives you the base constrains you need for deciding how pieces of content should relate to each other.
